Calculate Vimshottari Dasha

Date, time, and place. A clock time is required: the opening Mahadasha is counted from the Moon’s exact Nakshatra.

Choose a suggestion to confirm the place. Coordinates appear after you pick one.

Used for the Western chart. Vedic houses stay whole-sign.

A clock started by the Moon

Vimshottari Dasha is a timing system. The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth determines which planetary period is already running, and how much of it remains. From there the sequence of nine Mahadashas unfolds: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — then the cycle continues.

The lengths are fixed in the tradition: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. That is 120 years.

How the opening balance is counted

Each Nakshatra spans 13°20′. The Moon has already travelled some of that arc at birth. The remainder of the natal Nakshatra, divided by 13°20′ and multiplied by the ruling Graha’s full Mahadasha length, is the balance still to run.

Inner Light does not re-derive that fraction in the browser. The dasha engine back-dates the first Mahadasha so it starts before birth; the remaining slice is the part from the birth moment to that period’s end.

How to read the current period

When this page shows a current Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha, those are calculated from the birth Moon and today’s date. The names are the lords whose periods are running. Whether a period is easy or demanding is a separate judgment from the rest of the Kundli — sign, house, and aspects of that lord — which this timeline does not invent.

Birth time is required, because the Moon’s Nakshatra and the remaining balance of the first dasha depend on an exact lunar longitude.

Common questions

What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari is the 120-year dasha system of Vedic astrology. The Moon’s Nakshatra at birth sets which planetary period is already running, and how much of it remains. From there the nine Mahadashas unfold: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.
What is a Mahadasha?
A Mahadasha is a long planetary period. Each of the nine Grahas rules a fixed length, and together they total 120 years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17.
What is an Antardasha?
An Antardasha is a sub-period inside a Mahadasha. The same nine lords cycle inside each great period, so a Jupiter Mahadasha contains a Saturn Antardasha, a Mercury Antardasha, and so on.
What is a Pratyantardasha?
A Pratyantardasha is the next smaller division inside an Antardasha. Inner Light shows the nine Pratyantardashas of the current Antardasha when the dasha engine returns three levels.
Why is birth time required?
The opening balance depends on the Moon’s exact longitude in its Nakshatra. An unknown or midnight time can put the Moon in the wrong Nakshatra and start the wrong Mahadasha.
