Your Sun sign is calculated from the date you were born. Your Moon sign depends on the time too, because the Moon moves through a new zodiac sign roughly every two and a half days. Two people born on the same date can have different Moon signs if the Moon changed sign sometime between their births.
In astrology, the Moon is usually read as the part of you that runs underneath the surface: mood, instinct, what makes you feel safe, how you respond before you've had time to think it through. Where the Sun describes how you show up, the Moon describes how you feel while you're doing it.
We take your birth date, time, and place, and calculate the Moon's exact tropical longitude at that moment using ephemeris data, then map that position to one of the 12 zodiac signs. Because the Moon changes sign roughly every 2.5 days, birth time matters here more than it does for your Sun sign. If your birth time is uncertain by more than a couple of hours, your Moon sign could fall on either side of a sign boundary.
Three placements, three different questions. Sun sign: your core identity and how you express it. Moon sign: your emotional instincts and inner world. Ascendant (Rising sign): the impression you give before anyone knows you.
None of the three overrides the others. A person can have a bold Sun sign and a much quieter Moon sign, and both are accurate, just describing different layers.
Yes. If the Moon happened to be passing through the same sign you were born under, both placements match. It's not more or less significant than having different signs, just a coincidence of timing.
You need it to be accurate. Since the Moon changes sign every 2.5 days, an unknown or rough birth time can put you on the wrong side of a sign change, especially if you were born close to a sign boundary.
Neither is more true. They describe different things: outward identity versus inner emotional pattern. Full birth charts use both, along with the Ascendant and the rest of the planets.
Some people relate more to their emotional patterns than their public persona, so the Moon sign can feel closer to home. That's a common, normal reaction, not a sign anything was calculated wrong.
