Abhijit Muhurta

What is Abhijit Muhurta?

Abhijit Muhurta is a roughly 48-minute window centered on local solar noon, traditionally considered one of the most favorable periods of the day for starting important activities. Unlike Rahu Kaal, which marks a period to avoid, Abhijit Muhurta is generally read as auspicious.

How it's calculated

The full period between sunrise and sunset is divided into 15 equal muhurtas. Abhijit is the eighth of these, the one that falls in the middle of the day, centered on local solar noon rather than clock noon. Because it depends on sunrise and sunset, its exact clock time shifts by location and by season.

Why it's considered favorable

Solar noon is traditionally associated with the Sun at its strongest and most direct position of the day, which is part of why this period is read as auspicious in Vedic timing practices. It's commonly used for starting new ventures, important ceremonies, or significant decisions when a specific muhurta is being sought.

One exception worth knowing

On Wednesdays, Abhijit Muhurta is traditionally not considered auspicious, despite following the same calculation, because Wednesday is associated with a planetary influence that offsets the usual benefit. This is a detail many general muhurta calculators miss.

Common questions

Is Abhijit Muhurta always at 12 noon?+

Not by the clock. It's centered on local solar noon, which shifts through the year, and its exact clock time also depends on your location's sunrise and sunset.

Can I use Abhijit Muhurta on any day of the week?+

Traditionally, Wednesday is the one exception where this period isn't considered auspicious, even though the calculation is identical to other days.

How is this different from Rahu Kaal?+

They're opposites in character. Rahu Kaal is a period traditionally avoided; Abhijit Muhurta is traditionally sought out as favorable. Both are calculated from the same sunrise-to-sunset division of the day, just different segments of it.
