The rising sign in Vedic astrology
Lagna is the Sanskrit word for the rising sign, the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It is also called the Ascendant. In Vedic astrology it is the anchor of the whole chart. The sign of the Lagna becomes the first house, and the other houses follow in order from there.
Because the Earth turns once in a day, the Lagna changes about every two hours. This is why the birth time matters so much in a Kundli. Two people born on the same day in the same town, a few hours apart, have different Lagnas and different charts, even though the planets are almost identical.
Why Lagna matters
In Western astrology the Sun sign is the most talked about. In Vedic astrology the Lagna and the Moon sign are the main reference points. The Lagna describes the body, the temperament, the way you approach life and the overall direction of the chart. It also decides which planets are friendly or difficult for you. Each Lagna has a ruling planet, called the Lagna lord, and the condition of that planet is read as a sign of general strength and vitality.
A common saying among Vedic astrologers is that the Lagna is the body, the Moon is the mind and the Sun is the soul. Looking at all three gives a balanced view.
How Lagna is calculated
The calculation needs the date, the exact time and the place of birth. The place fixes the latitude and longitude, and the time fixes the rotation of the Earth. A computer then finds the point of the zodiac that was on the eastern horizon. Vedic astrology measures this point in the sidereal zodiac, using an ayanamsha such as the Lahiri value. The sidereal position is about 24 degrees earlier than the tropical one, so the Lagna is often the sign before the Western rising sign. See sidereal vs tropical.
For a person born close to a sign boundary, the difference can matter a great deal. If the Lagna is in the first or last two degrees of a sign, ask for a precise birth time and treat the result with care.
The twelve Lagnas
Aries Lagna. Ruled by Mars. Active, direct and competitive. Often quick to start and slow to rest.
Taurus Lagna. Ruled by Venus. Steady, practical and sensual. Values comfort, security and loyalty.
Gemini Lagna. Ruled by Mercury. Curious, talkative and adaptable. Learns by asking and by trying.
Cancer Lagna. Ruled by the Moon. Caring, sensitive and protective. Feels the mood of home and family strongly.
Leo Lagna. Ruled by the Sun. Confident, warm and proud. Wants to lead and to be recognized.
Virgo Lagna. Ruled by Mercury. Careful, analytical and helpful. Notices detail and prefers order.
Libra Lagna. Ruled by Venus. Fair, social and artistic. Seeks balance and partnership.
Scorpio Lagna. Ruled by Mars. Intense, private and determined. Strong will and deep feeling.
Sagittarius Lagna. Ruled by Jupiter. Optimistic, honest and restless. Drawn to learning, travel and belief.
Capricorn Lagna. Ruled by Saturn. Serious, patient and ambitious. Builds slowly and lasts.
Aquarius Lagna. Ruled by Saturn. Independent, thoughtful and humane. Values freedom and ideas.
Pisces Lagna. Ruled by Jupiter. Gentle, imaginative and compassionate. Absorbs the mood around.
Note that Vedic astrology uses the classical rulers and does not assign Uranus, Neptune or Pluto to any sign.
Lagna and the houses
In the Whole Sign system, the Lagna sign is the first house. If Leo is the Lagna, Leo is the first house, Virgo is the second, Libra is the third and so on. Each planet then lies in the house of the sign it occupies. The first house, along with the fourth, seventh and tenth, is called a Kendra, or angle, and is considered strong. The first, fifth and ninth houses form the Trikona, or trine, which is treated as the most favorable group. See the 12 houses for a Western view of the same areas of life.
The Lagna lord
The ruler of the Lagna, called the Lagna lord, is read as a key planet of the chart. Its sign, house and conditions show where energy flows. If the Lagna lord sits in a Kendra or Trikona, or in its own or exalted sign, it is said to give strength. If it sits in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, astrologers look for challenges and ways to manage them. For example, with a Taurus Lagna the lord is Venus, so the placement of Venus tells a great deal about the person.
Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign
Many Vedic astrologers read the chart from three starting points, the Lagna, the Moon sign called Chandra Lagna, and the Sun sign called Surya Lagna. The Lagna shows the body and the path, the Moon shows the mind and feeling, and the Sun shows the inner purpose. When the three agree, the chart reads clearly. When they differ, the person may feel pulled in different directions.
