How to calculate a life path number
There are two common methods, and they give the same final number almost every time.
Method 1: add all the digits. Write the date as numbers, add every digit, and reduce the total by adding its digits until you reach a single digit or a master number.
Method 2: reduce each part first. Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, then add the three results and reduce again. People who want to keep master numbers visible usually prefer this method because a master number can appear at a stage along the way.
Example 1: 29 September 1989
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Month | 9 | 9 |
| Day | 2 + 9 | 11, kept as a master number |
| Year | 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 27, then 2 + 7 | 9 |
| Total | 9 + 11 + 9 = 29, then 2 + 9 | 11 |
Method 1 gives the same answer: 2 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 47, and 4 + 7 = 11. The life path number is 11.
Example 2: 8 August 1990
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Month | 8 | 8 |
| Day | 8 | 8 |
| Year | 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 | 1 |
| Total | 8 + 8 + 1 = 17, then 1 + 7 | 8 |
Method 1: 8 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 35, then 3 + 5 = 8. The life path number is 8.
Example 3: 29 November 1992
Month 11 (a master number), day 2 + 9 = 11 (a master number), year 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 3. Adding 11 + 11 + 3 gives 25, which reduces to 7. Method 1: 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 34, then 3 + 4 = 7. The life path number is 7, and the master numbers that appeared along the way do not carry through to the final result.
The rule for master numbers
The numbers 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers. The usual convention is to stop reducing when the final total of the calculation is 11, 22 or 33. A master number that appears only as a stage along the way, such as the 11 for the month of November in Example 3, does not change the result when the final total reduces to something else. Some writers treat 33 as rare or leave it out. Check which convention a calculator uses, because it can change the displayed answer for some dates.
The meaning of each number
These are the traditional associations in Pythagorean numerology. They describe themes that numerologists attach to each number, not facts about any person.
| Number | Traditional theme | Often described as | Often described challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Independence and initiative | Self-starting, direct | Stubbornness, difficulty asking for help |
| 2 | Cooperation and balance | Diplomatic, patient | Over-sensitivity, avoiding conflict |
| 3 | Expression and creativity | Sociable, imaginative | Scattered focus |
| 4 | Structure and discipline | Reliable, practical | Rigidity |
| 5 | Change and freedom | Adaptable, curious | Restlessness |
| 6 | Care and responsibility | Nurturing, loyal | Taking on too much for others |
| 7 | Analysis and inner life | Reflective, thoughtful | Withdrawal, over-analysis |
| 8 | Ambition and material success | Organised, driven | Focus on status or control |
| 9 | Compassion and completion | Generous, idealistic | Letting go |
Master numbers
11 is read as a more intense form of 2, linked with intuition and inspiration. The traditional challenge is nervous tension, since the number is said to carry high expectations.
22 is read as a more ambitious form of 4, called the master builder, linked with turning large ideas into practical results.
33 is read as a more outward form of 6, called the master teacher, linked with service and guidance. It is the least commonly used of the three.
Many practitioners suggest that a person with a master number may also relate to the reduced number (2, 4 or 6) when the full theme feels like too much to live up to.
Life path compared with other numbers
The life path number comes from the birth date. Other numbers come from the name. In the Pythagorean system letters are given values from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order. The Chaldean system assigns values differently and does not use the number 9 for letters. For the life path number itself, both systems usually use the birth date in the same way, so the calculation on this page applies to both.
Commonly used name numbers include the expression number (all letters of the full birth name), the soul urge number (the vowels) and the personality number (the consonants). The Inner Light numerology calculator covers these.
What numerology can and cannot tell you
Numerology has no scientific support as a way of predicting a personality or an event. Studies of personality descriptions of this general kind find that many people accept broad statements as accurate about themselves, a tendency often called the Barnum effect. That does not make the exercise useless. Many people use their number as a prompt for reflection, in the same way that someone might use a journal question.
A sensible way to use the numbers is to read the description, note which parts feel true and which do not, and treat the rest as a story rather than a rule. Decisions about health, money or relationships belong with qualified professionals and with your own judgment.
Common questions about the calculation
What if the birth date is unknown or uncertain? Use the date shown on the birth certificate. Time of birth does not matter for the life path number.
Does the order of the date change the answer? No. Addition does not depend on the order, so day month year and month day year give the same result.
Frequently asked questions
What are the master numbers in numerology? 11, 22 and 33. They are kept when they appear as the final total of the calculation.
Can the life path number change? No. It depends only on the birth date.
Is the life path number the same as the Sun sign? No. The Sun sign comes from astronomy and the position of the Sun on the birth date. The life path number comes from arithmetic on the digits of the date.
