Elongation and altitude at sunset
Two angles used by moon-sighting criteria: the Moon's elongation from the Sun (the angular separation, 0–180°), and the Moon's apparent altitude above the horizon at local sunset. Authorities such as Odeh and MABIMS apply different thresholds to those angles. A negative altitude means the Moon is still below the horizon at sunset.

About this festival
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, and is one of the two major festivals in Islam, celebrated with communal prayer, festive meals, new clothes, and gift-giving, especially for children.
Unlike the Hindu festivals on this site, Eid al-Fitr's date is set by the Islamic lunar calendar and traditionally confirmed by the sighting of the new moon, which is why the exact date can vary by a day depending on region and local moon-sighting practice rather than being fixed purely by astronomical calculation in advance.
