What is calculated
Elongation and altitude at sunset
Two angles used by moon-sighting criteria: the Moon's elongation from the Sun (the angular separation, 0–180°), and the Moon's apparent altitude above the horizon at local sunset. Authorities such as Odeh and MABIMS apply different thresholds to those angles. A negative altitude means the Moon is still below the horizon at sunset.
