The number of your full name
The Destiny number, also called the Expression number, is one of the core numbers in numerology. It comes from the full name given at birth, and it is said to describe your natural talents, your abilities and the kind of goals you tend to work toward. If the Life Path number is the road, the Destiny number is the set of tools you carry along it.
Numerologists use the name from the birth certificate, with every first, middle and last name. The idea is that the name you were given is a code that stays with you, even if you later use a shorter name or a married name. Some people also calculate a second number from the name they use now, and read it as a layer that shows the person they have become.
The letter chart
In the Pythagorean system, each letter has a number from 1 to 9, assigned in order and repeating.
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
For the other main system, see Pythagorean vs Chaldean numerology.
How to calculate it
- Write the full birth name.
- Replace each letter with its number from the chart.
- Add the numbers of each name separately and reduce each result to a single digit, unless it is 11, 22 or 33.
- Add the results for all names and reduce again to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33.
Example: John Smith. John gives J 1, O 6, H 8, N 5, which is 20, and 2 + 0 = 2. Smith gives S 1, M 4, I 9, T 2, H 8, which is 24, and 2 + 4 = 6. Add the two results: 2 + 6 = 8. The Destiny number is 8.
Adding all the numbers in one pass gives 20 + 24 = 44, which reduces to 8, so the answer agrees. Where a total reaches a master number before the last step, many numerologists write both, for example 11/2.

Destiny and Life Path together
The two numbers are read side by side. A Life Path 4 with a Destiny 3 might be described as practical in method and creative in goals, with a task to bring order to ideas. A Life Path 7 with a Destiny 8 may feel a pull between the search for meaning and the drive for success. When the two numbers are the same, the themes are said to reinforce each other. When they are far apart, a person may feel a tension that takes time to resolve.
Related numbers from the same name
The name gives three core numbers. The Destiny number uses all letters. The Soul Urge number uses only the vowels and describes inner desire. The Personality number uses only the consonants and describes the outer impression. In the example above, John Smith has a Soul Urge of 6 and a Personality of 11, which reduces to 2, and the two together make the Destiny 8. Reading all three gives a fuller picture.
Questions about the name
Which name should I use? The name on the birth certificate. People with several given names include all of them.
What if my name was changed? Some numerologists read the birth name as the core and the new name as a later influence. There is no single rule, so choose one approach and keep it.
What about nicknames? Most ignore nicknames in the main reading, though some use them as a minor number.
What about letters from other alphabets? Transliterate the name into Latin letters in the way it is spelled on the official document.
A word of balance
Scientific studies have not found that the letters in a name predict the abilities or goals of a person. Numerology is a symbolic system and many people use it as a prompt to reflect on strengths. Do not choose a baby name, a job or a partner by a number alone, and be careful of any service that promises to change your fortune by changing your spelling. See the overview on the page about numerology.
