The sign on the eastern horizon
The rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs pass over the horizon in about twenty four hours. That means the rising sign changes about every two hours, and it is the part of a chart most sensitive to birth time.
The exact degree of the Ascendant is the cusp of the first house, the starting point from which the whole house layout of the natal chart is built. Two people born on the same day in the same city a few hours apart can share a Sun sign and still have very different rising signs.
What the rising sign shows
Astrologers describe the rising sign as the doorway of the chart. It shapes how you meet new people and new situations, the first impression you give and the style you fall into when you do not think about it. Many people say their rising sign describes how friends saw them when they were younger, before the Sun sign matured into view.
Traditional astrology also links the Ascendant with the body and physical manner, such as posture, voice and the way a person enters a room. Treat that as a loose tendency and not a rule. Appearance has many causes, and a rising sign is only one way of describing a style.

Scorpio rising. Intense, private and magnetic. People feel depth and a steady gaze, and sense that much is held back. The ruler is Mars in older systems and Pluto in modern ones.
Sagittarius rising. Open, cheerful and restless. People see an optimist with humour and a love of movement and ideas. The ruler is Jupiter.
Capricorn rising. Serious, composed and disciplined. People see maturity and competence, often early in life, with a dry sense of humour. The ruler is Saturn.
Aquarius rising. Independent, friendly and a little detached. People see an original thinker who values freedom and does not follow the crowd. The ruler is Saturn in older systems and Uranus in modern ones.
Pisces rising. Soft, dreamy and sensitive. People see kindness and imagination, and a person who absorbs the mood of a room. The ruler is Jupiter in older systems and Neptune in modern ones.
The chart ruler
The planet that rules your rising sign is called the chart ruler. Its sign, house and aspects show where the energy of the whole chart is directed. For example, Libra rising has Venus as ruler, so the condition of Venus in the chart says a lot about how that person approaches life.
How to find your rising sign
You need your date, exact time and place of birth. Use a birth chart calculator, enter the three details and read the sign listed at the Ascendant. Be careful with the time. A birth time off by even thirty minutes can change the degree, and a time off by two hours can change the sign. If your birth certificate shows only an approximate time, treat the rising sign as uncertain. Some astrologers use life events to test several possible times, a method called rectification.
Rising sign and the first house
In the popular Whole Sign house system, the whole rising sign becomes the first house, the next sign becomes the second house and so on. In Placidus, the first house starts at the exact Ascendant degree and the house sizes vary. In both cases, planets near the Ascendant are felt strongly in personality, so a planet within a few degrees of the rising degree often matters as much as a Sun or Moon placement.
